Mindful Decluttering and Home Organizing (Chaos meets Order)
Inspired by Verse 9 & Verse 11 of the Tao Te Ching
We spend so much of our lives trying to make room for more—more belongings, responsibilities, and achievements—filling our spaces and minds until there is hardly any room left to breathe.
When something is completely full, like a cup filled past its brim, it inevitably overflows. Instead of constantly pouring more into an overfilled life, creating a peaceful home begins with learning when to stop.
In Verse 9 of the Tao Te Ching (translated by Red Pine), Lao Tzu shares a timeless teaching about knowing when enough is enough:
“To hold until full is not as good as stopping.
To grind until sharp is not as good as keeping.
When gold and jade fill a hall, no one can protect them.
Wealth and position bring trouble with pride.
To perform a deed and retreat is the Way of Heaven.”
This ancient wisdom applies directly to our modern spaces. Continually adding more or pushing beyond what is necessary pulls us away from balance. True peace comes from recognizing when enough is enough.

When Our Homes Have No Room to Breathe
As Verse 9 reminds us, “When gold and jade fill a hall, no one can protect them.” Accumulating too much forces us to spend precious time managing our possessions until they begin to own us. Organizing has limits when we try to make room for everything.
Sometimes, the most meaningful change isn’t finding a better place for something—it is recognizing that we no longer need to keep it. Decluttering invites us to pause and ask ourselves:
Does this still serve me? Does it belong in the life I am living today? Am I keeping it because I value it, or because I feel I should?
Mindful living is not about reaching zero or stripping your life bare through extreme minimalism. It is simply about recognizing excess and choosing balance over over-saturation.

The Wisdom and Beauty of Empty Space
Yet, Verse 11 of the Tao Te Ching (translated by Red Pine) reminds us of the essential purpose of emptiness:
“Thirty spokes share a wheel’s hub.
It is the center hole that makes it useful.
Shape clay into a vessel.
It is the space within that makes it useful.
Cut out doors and windows for a room.
It is the holes which make it useful.
Therefore profit comes from what is there.
Usefulness from what is not there.”
In Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life, Dr. Wayne Dyer reflects on how musicians emphasize the pause—the quiet space between notes—that gives music its beauty. Without that pause, music becomes continuous noise. Likewise, quiet pauses in our homes allow the true melody of life to emerge.
Emptiness is not negative; it is space waiting to breathe. A clear counter or uncluttered room offers ease and clarity. The space between our belongings matters as much as the items themselves.
Empty space is not something missing. It can be something we have intentionally created.

Organizing Is Not About Controlling Everything
At Chaos Meets Order, organizing is about supporting the life you live, not maintaining strict perfection. Practical home organizing tips focus on simplicity: keep what you use, give items a designated home, and release what no longer serves you.

Creating Space for What Matters (Mindful decluttering)
Decluttering is an opportunity to make room for ease, rest, and connection. You don’t need to transform your entire home in one weekend—start small with one shelf or drawer, moving with curiosity and compassion.
The goal isn’t a bare space, but a home with room for life to unfold.
A Gentle Invitation to Pause
When you have done enough, let yourself stop. Sometimes the next step toward peace is not adding something new, but making room for what is already here.
As Lao Tzu reminds us: “A tree as big as a basin grows from a tiny sprout. A tower nine stories high rises from a heap of earth. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
Every meaningful transformation begins quietly. Take one small step today and begin creating the space you need for peace to bloom. Practice mindful decluttering
